Subject: Urgent request to extend medical evacuation from Gaza using community sponsorship

I am writing as your constituent to ask for your help in persuading the UK government to allow communities to welcome additional children under the Gaza medical evacuation scheme and to identify and resettle those they are able to help.

Despite the partial ceasefire the humanitarian catastrophe continues. Vast areas have been destroyed, families displaced, and infrastructure collapsed. Many people cannot safely return to their homes or access food, medical care, or clean water. Many children suffer from curable diseases and disorders with no hope of recovery where they are.

I am part of a growing group of individuals and community organisations, Communities for Palestinians, who are ready to provide a home and healing, a community of support for people from Gaza. We want to use the team approach of community sponsorship. Like many others, I feel devastated by the situation and determined to act. The UK public has shown before - in response to the crises in Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine - that communities are ready to help. We can do so again, if given the chance.

What is community sponsorship?

Community sponsorship allows local groups to welcome refugees and take shared responsibility for their integration. It was introduced in 2015 in response to the Syrian crisis and has proved highly successful. Sponsors provide housing, help with school places, support access to public services, and build community connections.

The government’s Immigration White Paper recognises the success of this approach and has committed to implementing it with ‘naming’ – basing selection on relationships of belonging. In the current climate, community sponsorship offers a constructive and compassionate model - one that strengthens communities and supports integration.

Community sponsorship is a proven, community-led approach that matches compassion with practical support. With government approval, local groups across the UK stand ready to help people from Gaza rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

I would welcome:

If you would forward a letter from our group to the Home Secretary in support of extending the current medical evacuation scheme to include our offer.
Raise the issue in Parliament or with the APPG on Palestine.
Host a parliamentary event with interested MP’s to discuss the potential of our offer.
